Josh McCown: I’ll compete with Robert Griffin III for starting job

Josh McCown

Currently up for trade by the Cleveland Browns, quarterback Josh McCown appears to believe (for the time being) he will be with the team in 2016.

“Right now, it’s come in and compete and show up, so that’s what I’ll do,” McCown said, according to Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk. “If that changes, that changes, and I’ll go to that next place and compete there as well. … I’ll go with that mindset, and if they see differently and I am traded or moved along, I’ll appreciate my time there and then go embrace the next opportunity.”

Most people would not expect McCown, who is 36, to still be on the Browns roster by training camp. The New York Jets and Denver Broncos have both expressed interest in the veteran, who could be obtained for a late-round draft pick.

Considering his unstable situation, McCown at least sports a refreshing attitude towards his status. Wherever he winds up, he’ll likely be designated as a backup, though, regardless of his intentions.

However, we could potentially see a scenario that has him competing with Mark Sanchez in Denver. He could also face Geno Smith in a competition if the Jets are unable to re-sign Ryan Fitzpatrick.

And, who knows? The San Francisco 49ers may reach out to McCown if Colin Kaepernick gets packed up in a trade to the Broncos.

Over the past two seasons playing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Cleveland Browns, McCown is 2-17 and he recorded a total of 4,315 passing yards, 23 touchdowns and 18 interceptions.

If the Browns draft a quarterback at No. 2, McCown will likely be released if no trade is struck by the end of April.
