Bucks announce Giannis Antetokounmpo will start at point guard next season

NBA Playoffs, Giannis Antetokounmpo

The Greek Freak is about to show just how freakish he can be on the basketball court. According to Milwaukee Bucks head coach Jason Kidd, the 6-foot-11 Giannis Antetokounmpo will be the team’s starting point guard next season.

Yes. You actually did read that right:

It’s an assumption more than anything, but can someone point to a taller starting point guard in the history of the NBA? This one scribe can’t.

Antetokounmpo, a first-round pick of the Bucks back in 2013, is one of the more intriguing young players in the game. The 21-year-old is averaging 16.6 points, 7.6 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game this season. He’s also added four triple-doubles and is playing solid basketball on both ends of the court.

There are, however, a couple questions one must ask when analyzing this move.

Michael Carter-Williams is the team’s current starting point guard. He’s been out since the end of February with a hip injury and is slated to miss the remainder of the year. Even before said injury, there were rumors that Carter-Williams was on the outs in Milwaukee.

The other thing to look at here was the viability of Milwaukee going with a frontcourt of the Greek Freak, Jabari Parker and Greg Monroe moving forward. That idea seemed to have a whole heck of a lot of upside to it.

Kidd wanting to mix things up is one thing. Doing so at the risk of taking away from what could be a strength might be an issue.
