Did the Broncos make the wrong decision by letting Peyton Manning retire?

Now that the Denver Broncos have officially lost Brock Osweiler to the Houston Texans, it’s time to revisit one question. Should they have tried harder to persuade Peyton Manning to come back for one more season?

Even if we start with the notion that the Broncos could have swayed Manning into coming back for one more season, letting him go was not only the right move, but it was the only move that made any sense.

Quite frankly, Manning’s play was terrible in 2015. He was a little better in the playoffs, but it was still hard to watch those games and think that he’d be any good in 2016. In reality, Peyton Manning is a soon-to-be 40-year-old quarterback who’s dealt with significant injuries. Sure, he’s one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history, but he’s not supposed to be good anymore.

The Broncos are at a point where they need to start looking for the quarterback of their future — the future they somewhat mortgaged to secure a championship with Manning.

Even if they knew prior to Manning’s retirement that Osweiler was going to be leaving, now is the time for Denver to find the quarterback of the future. That can come in free agency, via trade (Robert Griffin III and Colin Kaepernick have both been mentioned as potential targets), or by way of the draft.

As much as Manning has done for the Broncos in their recent past, he’s not the man to take them into 2016 and beyond.

So, while the retirement of Peyton Manning and the departure of Brock Osweiler leaves the Broncos with a presently unmanned quarterback position, they made the correct and only sensible decision when they let Manning retire.
