Sean Payton and Saints close to contract extension

NFL head coaches

Sean Payton will apparently be coaching the New Orleans Saints for a few more years, after all. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk cited an interview with Payton in which the coach confirmed that contract extension is near.

In an interview that will be televised on Thursday night’s edition of Pro Football Talk on NBCSN, Payton said that he is close to finalizing a new contract with the team. Payton also said he envisions remaining with the Saints for at least the next four or five years.

This should be welcome news for the Saints and their fans. Payton is only 52, so there’s no reason to believe he’s over the hill.

Florio’s report also said that “Payton expressed confidence that (Drew) Brees and the team will work out an extension soon.” This is more good news, as Brees is still one of the NFL’s most prolific passers, throwing for 4,870 yards in 2015, despite missing a game and having a depleted supporting cast.

Payton and Brees are by far the best coach and player in Saints history. Since taking over in New Orleans, Payton has guided the Saints to six playoff victories (all with Brees), including a Super Bowl XLIV win. Prior to his arrival, the team had one playoff win in its history.
