Reggie Bush hasn’t played a full season in three years, and he missed most of the 2015 season due to injuries. But he’s not done.
Speaking with reporters Sunday in San Francisco, Bush made it known he still has some good years left.
“I’m not retiring,” Bush said, via Michael Rothstein of ESPN.com. “I’m still playing. No, I’m not done. And I would never — knock on wood — I never want to end my career like that, going out with that.”
The former Heisman Trophy winner has never lived up to the hype that surrounded him when he was drafted No. 2 overall in 2006 by the New Orleans Saints.
His best stretch came in a three-year stretch between 2011-13 when he played with the Miami Dolphins and Detroit Lions.
Bush’s 2015 campaign with the 49ers was a huge disappointment. Signed to a one-year, $2.5 million contract, Bush appeared in just five games, gaining 28 yards on eight carries and adding four catches for 19 yards. His season was cut short in Week 8 when he injured his knee after a push from a defender sent him crashing into the wall in St. Louis (watch here).
At this point in his career, Bush won’t likely be a featured back in the NFL ever again. At the age of 30, with his best years clearly behind him and the injury-prone label well lacquered onto his resume, it’s not likely he will see a ton of interest in the open market this spring.
