Janoris Jenkins seems upset with Rams’ contract offer

Janoris Jenkins appears to be quite unhappy with the Los Angeles Rams as the two sides attempt to negotiate a long-term contract.

The soon-to-be free agent has been targeted, along with the other soon-to-be free agents in Los Angeles’ secondary, by general manager Les Snead as a top priority.

But based on a message sent by Jenkins on Twitter Sunday night it seems he feels disrespected by what the Rams are offering.

Jason Cole of Bleacher Report put out information Sunday from the NFL Scouting Combine that seems to confirm Jenkins’ frustration with the contract situation. Cole reports Jenkins rejected a five-year deal worth $45 million and that he fired his agent, further complicating matters between himself and the Rams.

In four years with the Rams, Jenkins made a name for himself as a pick-six expert, taking five interceptions back for touchdowns (three in his rookie campaign and two more in 2014). He has tallied 10 interceptions since joining the league in 2012 and has forced three fumbles, and playmakers are in high demand.

It seems clear that he believes he’s worth much more than $9 million per year, which would slot him in right around No. 15 in the league in terms of average salary for cornerbacks. No doubt he’d rather be paid more in line with what the upper-echelon corners are earning, which would come in at around $11-13 million per season.

Josh Norman is the top corner in this year’s upcoming free agency class. But he’ll almost certainly be tagged by the Carolina Panthers if a long-term deal isn’t struck by Tuesday, which is the cut-off date for any franchise or transition tags.

If that’s the case, then Jenkins immediately becomes the top cornerback left on the market, and he could very well bring in a bigger contract than the one he reportedly rejected by the Rams. Given how upset he seems to be with Los Angeles, it looks like he’ll soon get the chance to find out what the market says he’s worth.
