Steelers RB DeAngelo Williams carted off field with ankle injury

In the middle of a fight for their playoff lives, the Pittsburgh Steelers appear to have lost running back DeAngelo Williams for at least the rest of Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns, if not much longer.

Williams went down after a run up the middle and immediately grabbed his right lower leg/ankle. Shortly afterwards he was carted off the field.

His return is officially questionable.

Williams has been a key contributor within Pittsburgh’s offense this year filling in for Le’Veon Bell, who was lost for the season early on. Before Sunday’s game he had tallied 899 rushing yards (No. 9 in the NFL) and was tied with Devonta Freeman of the Atlanta Falcons for the league lead in rushing touchdowns, with 11.

If his injury is severe, and if the Steelers do make it into the playoffs, then it will be tough for Pittsburgh to feature a consistent rushing attack. The two running backs behind Williams are Jordan Todman and Fitzgerald Toussaint, neither of whom have much experience playing in big games at the NFL level.
