Richard Sherman: Seahawks ‘far from done’

The Seattle Seahawks season is over, but start cornerback Richard Sherman believes the franchise’s run of Super Bowl-contending teams hasn’t reached a stopping point.

ESPN’s Rich Cimini notes Sherman cited the team’s depth of young talent as a reason Seattle will continue being competitive.

“We’re far from done. Guys are just entering the prime of their careers. We can be special for a long time.”

There’s no doubt the outspoken defensive back is correct. The only snag will be the Seahawks maneuvering the salary cap.

Among players still under contract — starting with the geysers of the roster — Jimmy Graham, Cliff Avril and Marshawn Lynch are 29. However, the emergence of 22-year-old rookie Thomas Rawls likely made Lynch expendable.

Sherman, Russell Wilson, Kam Chancellor and Doug Baldwin highlight the 27-year-old group, while Earl Thomas and K.J. Wright are 26. Then there’s 25-year-old Bobby Wagner, Tyler Lockett (23) and Frank Clark (22).

Throw in potential re-signings in Jeremy Lane and Jermaine Kearse — both 26 — as well as a handful of others, and Seattle’s roster is again tremendous.

Now, all that talent may push veterans Russell Okung, Brandon Mebane and even Jon Ryan into free agency. Bruce Irvin, while young, may also bolt. Seattle must address its significant problem on the offensive line, especially if Okung leaves.

As long as Wilson is behind center and the defense remains full of Sherman and All-Pro talent, though, the Seahawks will be a popular pick to reach the playoffs and even win the Super Bowl.
