Maty Mauk issues handwritten public statement

Two days after being dismissed from Missouri’s football program, Maty Mauk has issued a handwritten statement.

The statement was issued via his Instagram account, which is private. However, Ashley Zavala of KRCG 13 shared the statement on Thursday:

The one thing that stands out here is that there is no apology within the statement. While Mauk does say his “intent was never to bring any harm to the University or football program,” he doesn’t say he’s sorry for getting himself into this situation.

The school dismissed Mauk after a video emerged of a person who looked like the quarterback snorting a white powdery substance. This happened just weeks after new head coach Barry Odom had met with Mauk to give him a fresh start after the he had been suspended twice in 2015 for a violation of team policies.

There was a report by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in which teammates say the video that ultimately got Mauk expelled from the program was actually two years old.

Regardless of the truth on that count, much like what Cleveland experienced with Johnny Manziel this year, the quarterback cannot shake the perception that he’s nothing but trouble for the University of Missouri. And for this, Mauk should have apologized.
