Chip Kelly on 49ers: ‘I want them to be fearless’

Chip Kelly must help the San Francisco 49ers rebound from a five-win campaign, and he’ll attempt to instill a particular attitude along the way.

According to CSN Bay Area, Kelly said he wants the team to be fearless.

“Not afraid of any situation you put them in. There are going to be times when its going to be difficult and be adverse, but you have confidence based on your preparation that you’ll see it through.”

Considering the franchise could hardly escape negative-themed headlines in 2015, hiring Kelly was basically a fearless move. So, the mantra fits starting from the top.

Kelly is often criticized for his miserable failure in charge of player personnel. However, that won’t be a part of his job description with the 49ers, which is conveniently ignored on occasion.

San Francisco’s on-field product was ugly at best last season. Part of those struggles were a direct reflection of Jim Tomsula and a coaching staff that seemed constantly confused.

That could change this year. For better or worse, Kelly believes his offensive style can succeed even without a perfect fit at quarterback or ideal skill-position talents. As long as the 49ers buy in to Kelly’s system and play with confidence, they’ll cut down on mistakes.

Expectations for the first season of Kelly’s tenure in San Francisco should be tempered, but a 49ers team that doesn’t look mentally defeated by halftime would be an improvement.
