Is Bill Belichick trolling Peyton Manning using Ty Law as honorary captain?

Bill Belichick

Bill Belichick is going full Rex Ryan on us, selecting Ty Law as the honorary captain for Sunday’s AFC Championship Game in Denver when the Broncos host the New England Patriots.

As many are likely aware, Ryan has oftentimes trolled his opponents by sending their former players out as honorary captains. Belichick may be taking the troll game to another level by having Law act as an honorary captain for this upcoming game, however.

As Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald points out, Law has intercepted Peyton Manning nine times in his career, including five times in the playoffs.

Perhaps this is just a happy coincidence (wink, wink).

In reality, this is the ultimate roast job. You know Belichick, the steel trap of football knowledge, remembers Lawson’s history with Manning. He wants to remind the Broncos’ signal-caller how many times his defense has taken advantage of him in the past.

In 20 career starts against the Patriots, Manning has thrown 44 touchdowns and 27 interceptions, posting a record of 7-13. The 44 touchdowns is an impressive, but those interceptions are stinky.

Belichick and his defense has long been a thorn in Manning’s side. It’s going to be fascinating to see which side comes away with the better end of things Sunday when the Broncos host the Patriots.
