Report: USC has reached out to Chip Kelly for head coaching job

The USC Trojans have reportedly reached out to Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly to let him know they’re interested in having him leave the NFL to lead one of the most legendary college football programs in the history of the sport, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network..

Kelly, who is currently dealing with despondency and quite the hot seat while he attempts to fix what he’s broken in Philly, has been tied to USC as a potential replacement for Steve Sarkisian since the former head coach was let go in the midst of personal crisis. However, he’s recently denied any interest in the job.

“No. No. No. No. No,” said Kelly to reporters in October (h/t phillyvoice.com). “North Texas. State. The Armadillos, or whatever. Just keep asking questions like this in press conferences, and it’ll be over quicker.

However, since he made that statement, the Eagles have continued spiraling downward and are now three games below .500 at 4-7. The good news is the NFC East is currently being led by the 5-5 New York Giants, meaning the season is still salvageable.

Should the Eagles somehow find a way to turn things around, then perhaps Kelly really won’t want to leave his job in Philadelphia. On the flip side, one has to believe he’d be awfully tempted to go back to the college ranks if things continue spinning out of control, and USC is one of the nation’s most attractive, and prestigious, schools in the nation.

In four seasons at Oregon, Kelly turned the Ducks into a national powerhouse and compiled a record of 46-7. He’s clearly capable of turning a college program around, which is why USC is so reportedly interested in him for the job.
