Nick Saban: College Football Playoff rankings don’t matter right now

Nick Saban Alabama

The first edition of the 2015 College Football Playoff rankings brought a bit of surprise, but Nick Saban—the head coach of fourth-ranked Alabama—said the poll doesn’t matter right now.

Per Bleacher Report’s Barrett Sallee, Saban believes there’s no good reason to release the CFP poll this early in the season.

Saban surely knows the only reason the College Football Playoff committee chooses to start its rankings before Week 10, because it’s simple:

I’m talking about it, and you’re reading.

Outrage followed the first release, since Ohio State and Alabama held the third and fourth spots despite an inconsistent season and one loss, respectively.

The brand-name programs were ranked higher than a dominant Baylor team, undefeated squads in TCU and Michigan State as well as an upstart Iowa squad that has more quality wins than Ohio State.

But here’s the thing: The playoff will work itself out.

In 2014, Mississippi State, Auburn and Ole Miss were in the initial top four, but each program didn’t finish there.

This season, second-ranked LSU takes on No. 4 Alabama. Third-ranked Ohio State battles No. 7 Michigan State. Sixth-ranked Baylor challenges No. 8 TCU. Ninth-ranked Iowa can establish its place in the top four by finishing the regular season 12-0 and winning the Big Ten Championship Game.

Saban is correct: The College Football Playoff rankings simply don’t matter right now. The only thing that does is the discussion.
