Stephen A. Smith fires back at Kevin Durant on ESPN’s ‘First Take’

Apparently, Stephen A. Smith didn’t take too kindly to Kevin Durant calling him a liar last Friday.

Smith had reported Durant was targeting the Los Angeles Lakers as his top free agent destination when he inevitably becomes available following the 2015-16 NBA season. That, Durant said, was a flat-out lie.

Defending himself on ESPN’s “First Take” Monday morning, Smith went off the rails against Durant.

Here are some of the comments Smith made, via TMZ.com:

“I sit here today incredibly offended by the personal attack that this man has put against me,” Smith said.

“What I would like to ask Kevin Durant and some of the brothers who talk behind my back in the NBA who probably put him up to something stupid like this … Do you really want me to come out of this seat and go back on the scene? Do you really wanna see me in an NBA arena?

Because I can assure you I’ll find out more in 10 minutes than I can get from 50 phone calls …. I have proven it.”

“We really wanna go here? We really wanna start something with me???? You sure about that??? I just want people to think about that.”

Smith also said “You don’t want to make an enemy out of me. And I am looking right at the camera,” via Richard Deitsch of SI.com.

So…it seems like he’s slightly upset about the whole, “liar” comment by Durant.

This may not be over yet, so buckle your seat belts for a bumpy ride. One has to believe Durant is going to respond to Smith now that the challenge has been issued.

For what it’s worth, while it does seem unlikely Durant is lying about any of this, perhaps there is truth to what Smith is saying. Durant still has an entire season with the Oklahoma City Thunder before he’s a free agent, and there is no doubt he isn’t interested in dealing with Lakers talk right now.
