Chip Kelly: I hope to win enough so college rumors go away

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly doesn’t exactly have the most secure job in the NFL, but the former Oregon leader has no plans to return to the college level.

According to Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer, Kelly said he hopes to become like New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin, winning enough games so the rumors disappear.

Coughlin only spent three years as the helm of Boston College (1991-93), finishing 21-13-1 in the Northeast. However, the two-time Super Bowl-winning coach is currently in his 20th NFL campaign that includes 167 wins—the 13th-most in league history.

Kelly guided Oregon for four seasons, amassing a 46-7 mark and bringing his fast-paced offensive system to Philadelphia and the NFL. Kelly has 22 wins, so he has a long, long way to go before catching Coughlin.

Per McLane, Kelly said he understands why the rumors persist but everything is merely speculation because no one in the college ranks, particularly from USC, has contacted him.

Kelly will remain atop a handful of coaching searches if the Eagles are unable to separate themselves from the early-season struggles. Whether or not Kelly even has interest in returning to the college level could vary depending on his job security in Philly.

For now, though, Kelly wants to keep his place as an NFL head coach. But that’ll take some more wins.
