Since missing consecutive cuts in May and June, Jason Day has dominated the PGA Tour, and the 27-year-old credits a portion of that success to his friendship with a golfer who once assembled an impressive run.

Ever heard of Tiger Woods?

According to ESPN’s Jason Sobel, Day cited regular communication with Woods as a reason for the recent impressive run.

“It’s just random things. We’ll be talking about finishing on Sundays and the process of stuff. His text messages, I have to digest them a little bit more, because he is very smart. And he has to kind of dumb it down to my level.”

Day continued, sharing his appreciation to receive advice from a player of Woods’ caliber:

“He’s been arguably one of the best players of all time. Who wouldn’t want that mentorship from a player like that, especially on the golf course? To be able to receive text messages and ask him questions and him being so open toward me has been fantastic.”

Three weeks ago, Day earned his first career major championship, posting a stellar 20-under score at Whistling Straits in the PGA Championship. A victory at the RBC Canadian Open and 12th-place finish at the WBC-Bridgestone Invitational preceded the major win, while a 19-under triumph at The Barclays followed.

Day is currently ranked No. 3 in the world behind Rory McIlroy and two-time 2015 major-winner Jordan Spieth but could ascend to No. 1 with a victory at the Deutsche Bank Championship. Day holds the top spot in the FedEx Cup Standings, though.

If the Australian manages to hold onto No. 1 in the standings through the next three weeks, he’ll achieve something Woods did twice, 2007 and 2009.
