Jadeveon Clowney: Texans ‘have to get after’ Jameis Winston

Jameis Winston is preparing for a test against the Houston Texans defensive line, and Jadeveon Clowney wants the talented unit to pressure the Tampa Bay Buccaneers into making a few mistakes.

Per Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, Clowney suggested the rookie doesn’t look completely comfortable before the snap but considering Winston was drafted No. 1, he’s still a talented player.

“First year, you can tell he can’t really read the defense that good, but you know he’s still a good player. He got picked first for a reason. They see something in him that’s pretty good. We just have to get after him.”

Clowney said he thinks the Texans should disguise coverages and hopes Winston subsequently holds the ball longer, which would give J.J. Watt and Co. more time to make a play.

As expected, Winston is still adjusting to the elevated level of competition in the league, which was perfectly evident when his first career NFL pass turned into a pick-six for the Tennessee Titans.

Through two games, Winston’s made a few of those mistakes Clowney is looking for. Winston has completed 30-of-54 passes for three touchdowns and two interceptions. He’s fumbled three times, though only one was lost.

Houston, on the other hand, has recorded four sacks—three from Watt, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year—snatched a pick and forced a fumble.

The Sunday afternoon clash is Winston’s toughest test so far in his young NFL career, and the Texans are hoping to cause a failing grade.
