Eagles owner claims Chip Kelly criticism is ‘beyond ridiculous’

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly has been the subject of much criticism over the past several months since assuming the general manager duties.

Eagles’ owner Jeffery Lurie is tired of the negative flood and recently stood up for Kelly.

Some of it has been beyond ridiculous,” Lurie said, via Philly.com. “Chip’s a leader in our organization and he’s held to a very, very high standard. I watch him on the field relate to players. His door is always open. I’ve never even seen that before. He cares about the people, the players. I’m very proud. I have complete respect for him as a person and as a coach.”

One of the major points of critique was the racist allegations that ex-Eagles teammates LeSean McCoy and Tra Thomas dished Kelly’s way. Earlier this year, McCoy stated that Kelly got rid of all the “good black players” on the team, and Thomas said there was a “hint of racism” in the locker room.

Lurie addressed McCoy’s and Thomas’ accusations:

“Listen, LeSean and Tra, both really good alumni of our organization. People say things sometimes when they’re, in a sense, ‘rejected.’ They get dejected because they’re rejected and they say things. I know the way Chip is and I’m very proud of the way he is.”

According to Lurie, Kelly “doesn’t need to prove anything.” For those who support Kelly, he has led the Eagles to 10 wins in each of his two seasons as the head coach. He also features a string of success as a college coach.

Lurie concluded by saying that Kelly has done everything that was expected when the Eagles interviewed him, such as building a roster and changing the culture of the franchise.

We can certainly agree Kelly has had his hands full building the roster. He really shook things up during the offseason when he made some bold moves—one of which was shipping McCoy off to the Buffalo Bills.

We’ll see how well Kelly’s offseason moves pay off soon enough.

As for the heavy criticism of Kelly, it doesn’t appear that Lurie is buying into one bit of it, no matter how much the haters want to hate.
