Dez Bryant injury: Cowboys won’t place WR on short-term IR

Confident that Dez Bryant will return sooner, rather than later, from his foot injury, the Dallas Cowboys have decided against placing the talented receiver on the short-term injured reserve list.

This news comes by way of the team’s official website.

What this means is that the team is hoping Bryant will be able to return quicker than the eight weeks he would have been out if he had been placed on the IR with a designation to return in 2015.

Head coach Jason Garrett addressed the team’s reasoning for keeping Bryant off the list.

“I think you’re always trying to assess how long a player is going to be out and the value of that guy,” Garrett said on Friday. “In Dez’s case, we want to give him every opportunity to be back as soon as he can. We’re optimistic that he can be back soon, and obviously he’s an impact player for us.”

Some national reports have suggested Bryant could be out for as long as 12 weeks. Owner Jerry Jones recently said it would take fully six weeks for the broken bone in Bryant’s foot to heal.

However, the team is taking an optimistic view, utilizing “day-by-day rehab and will try to get Dez on the field as soon as he’s ready.”

In the meantime, there are other players who must pick up the slack for the ailing superstar if Dallas has any hope of putting up enough points to win games until he returns. A rivalry game against NFC East foe Philadelphia this weekend will be the first hurdle of many, and the Cowboys will likely need to put up points in bunches to keep up with the Eagles in Philadelphia on Sunday.
