Chip Kelly: ‘We have answers when people blitz us’

The Philadelphia Eagles offense is a fast-paced style with multiple reads, and the variety of options on a given play allows head coach Chip Kelly to not worry about blitzes.

According to ESPN’s Phil Sheridan, Kelly said the Eagles—who will be quarterbacked by Sam Bradford—have options to counteract additional pressure.

“They’re going to do what they’re going to do. We’re going to do what we’re going to do. We have answers when people blitz us. There’s risk/rewards on both sides of it.”

Kelly continued, pointing out those risks and rewards. He said:

“There’s a statement: ‘When you blitz, the band plays.’ Either their band or our band. You can say, ‘Hey, let’s go after them.’ But if you do, you expose yourself on the back end. It becomes a mathematical game. How many guys in coverage, how many guys are you going to bring?”

Philadelphia’s quarterbacks must read defenses quickly, because many of Kelly’s play-calls contain three built-in possibilities.

In some cases, Bradford must decipher whether his initial read is crashing toward the running back, otherwise he’ll keep the ball for another decision. Then, depending on the movement of a specific defensive back, Bradford will either run or snap a quick pass to a particular receiver.

Consequently, it’s reasonable to see why former Philly quarterbacks have achieved such success throughout Kelly’s tenure.

All the evidence suggests Bradford will have a resurgent season in Kelly’s offense, and Philadelphia faithful certainly hopes the oft-injured quarterback indeed continues the trend.
