Bryce Harper on Nationals fans leaving early: ‘That was pretty brutal’

Bryce Harper

A huge contingency of fans bolted for the exits early on Monday during the game between the New York Mets and Washington Nationals, and Bryce Harper isn’t happy about being abandoned before the game was over.

Washington lost 8-5 to New York in the first of a three-game series that could determine if the Nats have any chance at all to catch the Mets in the NL East. Fans have been disenfranchised with their underperforming squad for most of the season, and they showed their displeasure by leaving early.

Harper called the mass exodus “brutal.”

By the time the ninth inning came around the ballpark was almost a ghost town.

For his part, Harper didn’t help the Nationals on Monday, going 0-for-4 and striking out thrice.

Because they’re playing the Mets, Washington’s losses in this series hurt all the more. This one dropped the team five games back of its divisional rival, and with just 25 games left to play before the season is over, there is no more room for errors.

These two rivals play five more times before that time arrives, so while things look gloomy now, there is still time to turn things around for Washington.

Should that happen, you can bet all the fans who left early on Monday will be screaming at the top of their lungs to see their beloved team playing October baseball.
