Aaron Rodgers says he’s not worthy of Michael Jordan comparison

Aaron Rodgers

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is arguably the best ever to play the position, but he’s not ready to accept a comparison to NBA legend Michael Jordan.

According to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky, although Green Bay backup Scott Tolzien said observing Rodgers is like “watching Jordan in his prime,” Rodgers appreciated the comment but declined its veracity.

“Well, I appreciate the kind words. I don’t know if the comparison is … I’m not worthy of that comparison. I enjoyed watching Michael. I was a big fan as a kid.”

It’s an intriguing thought, because MJ dominated the NBA, and Rodgers is currently torching every NFL defense that stands in his way.

Rodgers hasn’t thrown an interception at home since 2012, was named the MVP last season, has guided the Packers to four straight NFC North titles and has achieved a bevy of other accolades. His accuracy is unmatched, and in a vacuum, might be the best quarterback ever.

However, analyzing players in the same sport who played in a different generations is a futile exercise. It’s even less realistic to debate a cross-sport comparison—no matter how thought-provoking.

That doesn’t mean Tolzien was wrong to say something like that at all. Rodgers is undoubtedly one of the best quarterbacks to have take the field. Whether you love, hate or are indifferent to the Packers, the smart thing to do is appreciate greatness while he’s playing.

Because like Jordan, Rodgers can’t play forever.
