Watch: Aussie Josh Harris sets new official Beer Mile record

Australian Josh Harris is a national hero after setting a new record in the Beer Mile. Harris completed the Beer Mile with a time of four minutes and 56.2 seconds.

No, this isn’t a joke. This is a real story with real people doing really awesome stuff.

What is the Beer Mile, you ask?

Per the event’s official Facebook page:

“In the vast world of extreme sports, there exists a sub-culture called ‘digestive athletics.’ The most famous, glorified, respected and celebrated of all the events of this underworld is the Beer Mile.”

This is how it works: Contestants drink a beer and then run a quarter mile, and then do the same thing every quarter mile. Four beers are therefore consumed during the race, which makes for some entertaining displays the longer the race wears on.

Here is video proof of Harris’ epic feat.

Harris avoided any mishaps, or as the event’s Facebook page hilariously wrote, his effort went as “smooth as a freshly shorn Australian sheep calf.”

Make of that what you will, but we’re pretty sure it means it was as smooth as silk, or something of that nature.

Harris has been training for this event for some time now, as he divulged to SI.com:

“It’s something I’ve been working on for a few weeks now. Training has included 3 shorter interval sessions (200-400m) with beer recovery in the final set. I’ve also been drinking one beer per night at top speed, and on a Sunday after my long run, eating as much food as I can with a beer to finish once I’m close to puking.”

Congratulations, Mr. Haris, for proving that athletics and drinking can be an amazing combination. Bravo, sir. Bravo.
