Rory McIlroy’s ankle is “good” after practice round for PGA Championship

Rory McIlroy may not be human.

The world No. 1 golfer recently suffered a gruesome ankle injury, rupturing a ligament just five weeks ago. However, he’s already back in action and is hitting balls one day after going through an entire practice round at Whistling Straights as he prepares for the PGA Championship next weekend.

He’s already a two-time PGA Championship winner and is eager to get back into the swing of things after missing the past month. However, many have wondered if his return to action this soon could be a bit too hasty—a notion McIlroy doesn’t share.

When asked about his ankle after going through his first 18-hole practice round, McIlroy made it sound like his injury won’t be a problem at all next week.

“It’s good. It’s good,” he said (via PGA.com). “Obviously, getting around a golf course like this, playing 18 holes, it felt fine. It doesn’t feel … I mean, it’s good. I’ve come a long way in five weeks. This has been the five-week mark today from when I did it. I think maybe there’s just a little stiffness in the mornings, but it’s good.”

No doubt, having 24-hour access to the best care the world can offer has been a tremendous asset for McIlroy, but it’s still hard to believe he’s going to play on this ankle.

He posted this picture just three days ago, meaning his ankle still looks like the picture on the right.

“It’s good. It’s good,” he says…

Wow.

All eyes will certainly be on the Irish golfer on Thursday this upcoming week when he tees off at Whistling Straight. After winning the final two major championships last season, he has come out hot again this year, finishing the Masters in fourth place and the U.S. Open in a tie for ninth place.

If his ankle does hold up over the long weekend, then there is a good chance he’ll be in the hunt over the weekend, when anything is possible.
