Matt Cassel ‘probably the leader in the clubhouse’ at QB for the Buffalo Bills

Despite an unimpressive spring and training camp thus far, it appears Matt Cassel could be the starting quarterback by default for the Buffalo Bills this upcoming season.

Tyler Dunne of the Buffalo News gave his thoughts on the quarterback “competition” happening currently in Buffalo after Sunday’s practice—the team’s third this summer:

“EJ Manuel’s woes continued Sunday. He dropped a shotgun snap one play of 11 on 11 and overthrew Chris Hogan the next. Working against air, he missed a receiver. The Bills probably wish they could mold Manuel’s measurables, Taylor’s speed and Matt Cassel’s experience into one quarterback. They can’t. Cassel is probably the leader in the clubhouse right now.”

Here’s a look at the throw Manuel missed, as Dunne mentioned.

It’s a crying shame, really, how much talent will be wasted this year in Buffalo.

The offense is seriously stacked, with outstanding second-year receiver Sammy Watkins leading the way. Robert Woods, Percy Harvin and tight end Charles Clay join Watkins and comprise an incredible array of raw talent just waiting to be utilized.

Unfortunately, the Bills won’t have a chance to see just how good this group can be in 2015.

That Cassel is the best option for Buffalo right now should be a depressing thought for Bills fans. After minor success in New England (2008) and then again in Kansas City (2010) his career leveled out to what we see today. He’s a career sub-60 percent passer who has thrown 30 touchdowns and 34 interceptions the past four seasons while starting 26 games.

Ryan is looking for a quarterback who can take care of the ball so that the running game and defense can carry the team to victory. Cassel hasn’t been particularly trustworthy the past four seasons, yet he’s currently taking most of the first-team reps for the Bills.

This isn’t going to end well, is it?
