Young Jordan Spieth has a diabolical plan in place to taunt Phil Mickelson.
Spieth has often been on the receiving end of Mickelson’s wise-cracks, and now he has the perfect weapon with which to fire back at the PGA Tour legend.
According to ESPN’s Bob Harig, Spieth plans on using his newly acquired U.S. Open trophy to taunt Mickelson during a planned match play event pitting himself and Justin Thomas against Mickelson and Rickie Fowler.
“I’m going to try and get the U.S. Open trophy flown in so I can sit on the front of each green for Phil,” Spieth said. “So I’ll have something for him — just dishing it back. We’ll see if we can get somebody to carry it around for the round.
“It’s the first time I have something on him.”
That’s a cold, cold burn.
As many are likely aware, Mickelson has never won the U.S. Open in 24 attempts. He has famously finished in second place an astonishing six times and has accumulated 10 top-10 finishes.
Spieth, at the age of 22, already has earned a victory in the tournament Mickelson is desperate to win, which should make the young man’s upcoming troll work all the more effective.
Both men are preparing for the PGA Championship this week, which takes place at Whistling Straights near Kohler, Wis.
Mickelson has one PGA Championship trophy in his collection, while Spieth has yet to claim one for himself. After choking down the stretch at St. Andrews last month, losing out on a chance at history, Spieth has vowed “revenge” to make up for his lapse.
