New York Jets embattled quarterback Geno Smith reported to practice on Monday for the first time since having surgery to repair a busted jaw sustained during a locker room fight with former teammate IK Enemkpali two weeks ago.

Rookie wide receiver Devin Smith was also back after sustaining a punctured lung and broken ribs.

The third year quarterback was spotted tossing the ball to both Smith and Shaquelle Evans during Monday’s practice in the rehab area.

This notes positive progress on Smith’s end, but he doesn’t need to rush back. The Jets are already set to start Ryan Fitzpatrick for the beginning of the season.

Smith has faced many uphill battles over the past two tumultuous seasons with the Jets. He has a pass completion percentage rate of only 57.5 and owns an unfavorable touchdown to interception ratio of 25 to 34.

Smith’s original diagnosis was expected to have him out anywhere from six to 10 weeks.
