Bucs OC: Jameis Winston picking up offense quicker than anticipated

Jameis Winston

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers need Jameis Winston to have a big year to avoid a miserable campaign. Thankfully, he’s been making great “progress” of late, according to quarterbacks coach Mike Bajakian, who is excited about his star pupil.

Winston’s first NFL experience wasn’t ideal, though he did eventually make a couple of “wow” plays that showcased his special talents—both running and passing the ball. Following his latest practice in which he went 16 of 20 in 11-on-11 drills, Bajakian praised Winston’s ability to pick up the offense.

“He’s picked up the offense quicker than I anticipated…Every day he’s coming out to work and getting better. (h/t ESPN.com)”

The coach also said he wants to see better execution and communication between Winston and his receivers, as well as overall game management.

The young quarterback will surely have his work cut out for him when Geno Atkins, who has been unstoppable in camp, and the Cincinnati Bengals come to town for a Monday night showdown. It’s one thing to play well in practice against a defense you’re familiar with and quite another to execute well against a foreign opponent.
