Anthony Davis wants Olympic gold medal more than NBA MVP trophy in 2016

Anthony Davis, center for the New Orleans Pelicans, would much rather have an Olympic gold medal than an NBA MVP trophy in 2016, and his reason might surprise you.

Speaking with Chris Palmer, the outrageously talented big man revealed that he’d rather win the gold “because it only comes every four years.”

Translation: Davis knows how precious winning a gold medal is, and he knows he can win more than one MVP in the NBA.

This isn’t a cocky statement, either. Anyone who has kept up with his progress over the past few years would likely agree that Davis is well on his way to challenging LeBron James, James Harden and Kevin Durant for the NBA’s top individual award.

He’s put on eight pounds of pure muscle this summer under the guidance of Pelicans strength and conditioning coach Jason Sumerlin, who says Davis has been working diligently to strengthen his core.

“He has been lifting consistently, doing all the small things perfectly and efficiently,” Sumerlin said of Davis’ regimen (h/t the team website). “We are more consistent in his lifts and his corrective exercises. He’s lifted a lot more weight – he’s stronger than he’s ever been.”

Given his outstanding repertoire of basketball skill moves, adding more strength to his game will make Davis all the more dangerous in the years to come.

Davis and his Team USA teammates are preparing for another run at gold in the Rio Summer Games in 2016. He was part of the 2012 team that brought home the gold in London and wants another taste of international glory.

Based on his drive to get stronger, quicker and faster by putting in the hard work in the weight room, you can be sure Davis will be a driving force for the United States men’s basketball team next summer.
