Steve Kerr Takes Funny “Jab” at Gregg Popovich

Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr sure is feeling good about himself after leading the team to the NBA title in his first season. Someone that people say has a self-deprecating sense of humor, Kerr enjoys joking around as much as any coach in the NBA.

Mentor and current San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich was the latest victim of Kerr’s joking ways. When talking about the additions San Antonio has made during a recent appearance on NBA TV at the Summer League in Vegas, Kerr had this to say (via NBA.com).

“You look at what San Antonio did getting Aldridge, I mean if they don’t win the whole thing next year it’s clearly the coach’s fault.”

Most betting lines have San Antonio and Golden State right up there with the Cleveland Cavaliers as the three teams favored to win the title next season. Adding LaMarcus Aldridge to the mix gives the Spurs a real shot at dethroning the Warriors in 2016-17.

Kerr continued:

“I mean if Pop can’t win the whole thing with that roster then he has no business coaching in this league.”

The current Warriors head coach played under Popovich for four seasons towards the latter part of his playing career. The two are seen as good friends and actually communicate on a regular basis. Anyone taking Kerr’s words seriously should probably lighten up a bit.

Though, it’s going to be awesome to see this mentor/pupil rivalry grow in the Western Conference. Kerr’s Warriors aren’t going away any time soon, and Pop just recently indicated he plans on coaching out the five-year extension he signed with the team last summer.
