Report: Rams Expect Rookie RB Todd Gurley to Start Training Camp on NFI List

The St. Louis Rams drafted running back Todd Gurley out of Georgia with the No. 10 overall pick, knowing he might not be ready to take part in the team’s training camp.

This appears to be the case now near the end of July. According to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport, the Rams expect to place Gurley on the Non-Football Injury (NFI) list at the start of training camp.

Rapoport also mentioned that it was the team’s plan when he was selected and they will take him off the list when he is fully healthy. During the offseason, there were no reported setbacks regarding Gurley’s knee. And, while the Rams were non-committal about the rookie being ready to practice at training camp, head coach Jeff Fisher said “you could probably assume” Gurley will end up playing sooner that you think.

Gurley’s condition will be one of the headlines to monitor in August. Once he is healthy, he and second-year running back Tre Mason should combine to form one of the more potent backfields in the NFL. The bottom line is the Rams need to win more games. There should be little excuse not to win at least when it comes to the Rams’ ground game.

This is all good news for the Rams, but not so much if you are a fantasy football player who is trying to target the right Rams running back to draft this season. We all know how well that went with the Rams running backs last year.
