Report: Giants Sending a Trainer to Evaluate Jason Pierre-Paul at the Hospital

New York Giants pass rusher Jason Pierre-Paul injured his hand in a fireworks accident on the Fourth of July. NFL Media’s Kimberly Jones is reporting that the Giants are sending trainer Ronnie Barnes to visit Pierre-Paul in the Miami-area hospital where the former first-round pick remains days after the incident.

A team source also reported that JPP “is doing ok.”

Reports initially indicated that Pierre-Paul suffered nerve damage to his hand. Further reports suggested that the damage doesn’t appear to be career-threatening.

The Giants’ medical staff should have a better picture of JPP’s prognosis and possible availability after the team acquires a first-hand understanding of the significance of the injury. If the injury is severe enough, JPP could be placed on the NFL’s PUP list or non-football injury list for the start of the season. Since the injury, the Giants pulled what was a standing $60 million long-term offer to Pierre-Paul—an offer the pass rusher wasn’t considering signing off on.

If it is determined by the medical staff that JPP is able start the season, he will most likely play under the $14.8 million franchise tag the team threw his way back in March.
