Milwaukee Bucks Would Be Smart to Lock Up John Henson

The Milwaukee Bucks are almost ready to explode onto the NBA landscape, and keeping shot-blocking machine John Henson on the roster would be a smart move.

ESPN’s Marc Stein reports Henson and the franchise “are in advanced negotiations toward a contract extension.” Stein notes:

“One source close to the talks described a Sirius XM NBA Radio report Sunday night that terms have already been agreed to as ‘premature,’ since there are still final negotiating hurdles to be cleared. But the source said the sides are indeed heading toward a deal that would further solidify that six-player base under coach Jason Kidd.”

Henson swatted 2.0 shots per game—the league’s sixth-highest total—while recording just 18.3 minutes per contest. He’s not a tremendous scorer, but the 6’11” center perfectly complements the offensive-minded, newly acquired power forward Greg Monroe.

Milwaukee is building a well-rounded roster that Jabari Parker, Monroe and Khris Middleton appear poised to establish as a perennial postseason qualifier. Henson, Michael Carter-Williams and Giannis Antetokounmpo are the team’s top defensive pieces, and they’re evenly spread around the post, point and wing.

The Bucks are deep, and they’re only going to improve. Henson isn’t a star, but the 24-year-old is a wonderful role player who can protect the paint for Milwaukee throughout his prime.
