Derek Carr Heaps on Praise for Rookie Amari Cooper: “The Sky’s the Limit”

Oakland Raiders’ second-year quarterback Derek Carr had nothing but praise for rookie wide receiver Amari Cooper when speaking with 95.7 The Game on Tuesday

Via the team’s official website:

“[Cooper] is ridiculous in and out of his breaks. His style of play is perfect for this league. He’s good at getting on toes and creating separation. He’s good at when the ball is in his hands making those fast-twitch movements to make a guy go one way so he can take it to the house. It’s just little things that honestly people don’t even notice.”

This aligns with the description that NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported earlier of the rookie, when he remarked that Cooper is the closest NFL-ready receiver Alabama has produced since Julio Jones.

Carr is obviously thrilled with the Alabama product:

“I think the sky’s the limit for him, obviously. Hopefully I just get the ball into his hands so he can make the plays.”

Cooper is coming from a 2014 college season where he totaled an incredible 124 receptions, 1,727 yards and 16 touchdowns.

He possesses great speed and advanced route running which is bound to make him have have an immediate impact for the Raiders’ offense. Oakland hasn’t had a receiver eclipse the 1,000-yard barrier since Randy Moss in 2005. Cooper could certainly be the player to put that stat to rest in 2015.

Carr further boasted about Cooper, who is expected to be a leading candidate for NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year:

“His work ethic is second to none. I was throwing with him as soon as mini-camp was over so we can get more reps in, and our plan was to throw a couple more times, but he texted me that night. He said, ‘Hey, let’s throw at least three more times. I need to get this one route right.’ Just him telling me that kind of stuff, it blew my mind.”

The Oakland Raiders have appeared to be trending up since the arrival of Derek Carr last season, and it should be exciting to watch Carr and Cooper continue their chemistry on the field once the regular season gets underway. Plus, the addition of wide receiver Michael Crabtree should only enhance Oakland’s offense moving forth.
