San Diego Chargers rookie running back Melvin Gordon is apparently a big fan of Minnesota Vikings’ veteran rusher, Adrian Peterson. In fact, Gordon was so thrilled to see Peterson return to practice that he contacted his longtime buddy, Vikings cornerback Trae Waynes.

Gordon grew up with Waynes in Wisconsin and dished out quite the earful during their conversation, per Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press:

“He’s a huge Adrian Peterson fan,” Waynes said of Gordon. “He was saying to me, ‘What’s he like? How does he run like he does?’ All that kind of stuff. I called him a groupie. I’m like, ‘Man, you’re like a groupie.’ He’s like, ‘Man, I’m a fan.'”

Overcome with excitement, Gordon had more questions for Waynes regarding Peterson’s locker:

“He was like, ‘Man, what’s his locker look like like?’ So I’m like, ‘I’ll take a picture of his locker for you.’ So I took a picture of his locker (for Gordon).’”

Coincidentally, Gordon wears No. 28, just like Peterson number. However, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported that Gordon is trying to get No. 25, which he wore when he played high school football with Waynes and then at Wisconsin. Thus far, though, Chargers safety Darrell Stuckey has yet to relinquish the number to Gordon.

In the end, if Gordon can’t convince Stuckey to give him No. 25, the rookie will wear the number of his favorite NFL running back. That kind of adds to the whole “groupie” aura just a bit more.
