Titans Head Coach on Justin Hunter: “Either Get It or You Won’t Be in This League Anymore”

Tennessee Titans head coach Ken Whisenhunt had some frank remarks regarding third-year wide receiver Justin Hunter, who has failed to impress in his first two seasons with the team.

After praising what he’s seen from Hunter during the team’s offseason activities, Tennessee’s head coach threw in one major caveat:

“At some point, you either get it or you won’t be in this league anymore,” Whisenhunt said, via The Tennessean. “That’s the natural order of the NFL.”

Not often do you hear a head coach speak in these terms regarding one of his players. It was likely Whisenhunt’s way of continuing to light a fire under Hunter, who is entering an extremely important year in his career.

For Hunter’s part, he fully understands the need to improve on the football field:

“I’ve got to get it going,” the former second-round pick said. “Going into my third year, I’ve got to improve. I can’t falter in any part of my game.”

Hunter simply hasn’t gotten it going during his two years in the NFL. He’s recorded a total of 46 receptions on 109 targets in 26 games (eight starts). And while the receiver is averaging 18.5 yards per reception, he needs to show more consistency.

Tennessee originally acquired the right to select Hunter by moving up a handful of spots in the second round of the 2013 NFL draft with the San Francisco 49ers. It yielded a third-round pick in the 2014 NFL draft in that deal—a pick that ended up being used on the recently retired Chris Borland.

Needless to say, there’s a certain level of investment here on Tennessee’s part.
