Report: Kyrie Irving Suffers Fractured Left Knee Cap, Out for Four Months

Cleveland Cavaliers guard Kyrie Irving will miss about four months after reportedly suffering a fractured left knee cap in the team’s Game 1 loss to the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals on Thursday night.

It’s a major blow to a Cavaliers team that still has to worry about preparing for the remainder of the NBA Finals without Irving on the court. It’s also a major blow in Irving’s young career.

Here’s a statement from the team’s official website:

“Cavaliers guard Kyrie Irving left last night’s NBA Finals game one in the overtime period with a left knee injury. He received an MRI today at Stanford Sports Medicine Clinic, which revealed a fractured left knee cap. He will have surgery to repair the knee in the coming days at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland by Cavaliers head team physician Dr. Richard Parker. His recovery time is projected to be three to four months and his status will be updated as appropriate.”

Here’s the injury as it happened:

With Irving out of action for the remainder of the Finals, Matthew Dellavedova will take over as the Cavaliers’ starting point guard, going up against league MVP Stephen Curry in the process.

Unfortunately, this injury will have a dramatic impact on the outcome of the Finals against Golden State. With Irving out of action, Cleveland is shorthanded in a series against a team that is now 80-18 on the season, postseason included.
