The San Francisco 49ers signed veteran running back Reggie Bush to add depth to the position after the departure of Frank Gore in free agency.
It was reported that Bush was receiving the first-team reps over second-year back Carlos Hyde in each individual drill during the team’s minicamp this week. While this likely occurred out of respect for the veteran, it is worth noting that Bush, along with Kendall Hunter and possibly rookie Mike Davis, may eat into some of Hyde’s carries this season.
Even though it is expected that Hyde will be the team’s lead rusher, the coaches are going to make him earn the 20-plus carries he should expect per game this season. The focus on Bush this week could also have to do with the fact that Hyde missed some time during May’s OTAs. Bush’s presence with the first team also provides an example of leadership to the younger running backs. In this regard, Bush is simulating the role that Gore vacated.

Head coach Jim Tomsula has been thrilled ever since the team signed Bush. Therefore, it would not be surprising to see Bush play a pretty big role this season, at least in the receiving game. Over the course of his nine-year career, Bush has averaged 387 receiving yards and 51.7 receptions per season.
