Phillies, Rangers Engaging in Trade Discussions Surrounding Cole Hamels

It almost feels like Cole Hamels will be 50-years-old and out on a fishing trip when he finally gets that call he’s been waiting for. The veteran starting pitcher has continued to maintain that he wants to play for a contender—something that hasn’t come to fruition over the past few months.

Now entering trade season, reports are surfacing that the last-place Philadelphia Phillies are once again engaging in trade discussions surrounding the 31-year-old starter.

The big thing here is that Hamels appears willing to waive his no-trade clause to go to Texas, which has been a point of contention for any trade talks Philadelphia has engaged in thus far.

Despite a contract that will pay the three-time All-Star $70-plus million over the next three seasons, there is going to be a strong market for his services. In 14 starts this season, Hamels has recorded a 5-5 record with a 2.96 ERA and 1.11 WHIP.

Seemingly frustrated by Philadelphia’s inability to contend (25-47 this season), Hamels had made it clear in the past that he would like to move on. His 22-28 record over the past two-plus seasons is a primary example of said struggles.

In order to acquire Hamels, the Rangers would have to give up a nice amount in return. A bounty that would likely include either Alex Gonzalez or Jake Thompson, who are the team’s top pitching prospects.

At 37-33 on the season, the Rangers are in the midst of the AL West race. Acquiring someone of Hamels’ caliber would assuredly help the team overtake the Houston Astros in the division.
