Former NFL Running Back David Wilson to Make Track and Field Debut

Jim O'Connor-USA TODAY Sports

Former New York Giants running back David Wilson, who had to retire due to a neck injury he suffered in his second season in the NFL, is now attempting to make his name known in another sport.

Wilson, a first-round pick of the Giants back in 2012, is set to make his professional track and field debut at the Adidas Grand Prix in New York City this upcoming weekend. Wilson will be participating in the triple jump in an attempt to qualify for the USATF Outdoor Championships in Oregon later this month.

Wilson’s ultimate goal is to represent the United States at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

The former Virginia Tech standout was diagnosed with diffuse cervical stenosis (spinal stenosis) last August, which forced him to retire from the sport after just 21 career games.

In making the transition to track and field, Wilson has a past history of success in this sport. He won the national championship in triple jump while in high school and just recently indicated that his personal best in that event is 53 feet, 1 3/4 inches, which is just below the mark that would have qualified him for the 2012 Olympics (via NY Daily News).
