The Denver Broncos just started their mandatory three-day minicamp, but they are going to be without one major star. Wide receiver Demaryius Thomas isn’t expected to be in attendance.

Thomas, who is not currently under contract, was given the dreaded franchise tag back in March. He has yet to sign off on the tag or participate in any previous voluntary activities with the Broncos during the offseason.
The $12.8 million Thomas is slated to earn in 2015 if he signs the franchise tag would make him the second-highest paid receiver in the NFL.
The biggest issue here between Thomas and the Broncos is not regarding his 2015 salary. He wants a long-term deal with more security, and that’s where the significant gap in negotiations comes into play.
Thomas has played a significant role in the Broncos’ offense the past few seasons. He’s averaging averaged 99 receptions per season since the start of the 2012 campaign. Last year alone, he was responsible for 1,619 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns.
Thomas’ contract situation will be one watch as training camp gets underway near the end of July. By then, something will have to give one way or another.
