Cole Hamels Now Open to All Trade Possibilities

It sure looks like Philadelphia Phillies ace Cole Hamels wants out of dodge. The same day manager Ryne Sandberg abruptly announced his resignation, the All-Star pitcher had some rather interesting comments to share to the media—comments that run contrary to what he had previously indicated.

“I have not been approached, Hamels said about accepting a potential trade,” via CSN Philly. “When I’m approached, then I can make a decision and provide an answer about a team. But I’m open-minded on everybody and everything.”

Previous reports indicated that Hamels would block any potential deal to the Toronto Blue Jays and Houston Astros. When approached about those reports, the 31-year-old starter seemed genuinely confused.

“People are looking at it like I’m holding the dice, but I’m not. Ruben (Amaro Jr.) and Pat (Gillick) are.”

These comments come amid suggestions that Philadelphia is holding ongoing dialogue with the Texas Rangers surrounding its three-time All-Star.

Remember, it was just a few months ago that Hamels indicated he would rather play for a contender:

“I just want to win. That’s all. That’s all any competitor wants. And I know it’s not going to happen here,” the veteran said back in February. “This isn’t what I expected. It’s not what the Phillies expected, either. But it’s reality.”

If Hamels is willing to waive his no-trade clause to go to any contending team, he will most assuredly be moved by the non-waiver July 31st trade deadline. At 26-49 on the season, Philadelphia would be best served getting assets for him in what should be a seller’s market.
