The scene at Nationals Park in Washington on Thursday night isn’t easy to look at. It also has a potential to be bad for the game of baseball moving forward this season.
Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper suffered an apparent left knee injury fielding a ball in the top of the sixth inning against the Tampa Bay Ray:
Every time a player in any sport grabs for his knee immediately after an injury, the worst-case scenario comes to mind. The good news for Harper and the Nationals—heck for all baseball fans—is that Harper was able to exit the game under his own power. The play occurred shortly after a rain delay, indicating that the slick surface could have played a role.
There are no further updates on Harper’s status.
Thus far this season, Harper is hitting .344 with 22 homers. He also leads the Majors in slugging percentage as well as on-base plus slugging.
