The State of Alabama recently passed the “Tim Tebow” Bill, which allows home-schooled students to participate in sports and other extra curricular school activities, providing certain educational requirements are met. Now, the Texas State Senate has adopted a similar bill, which will allow home-schooled students to compete in their University Interscholastic League (UIL) sports.
Tebow is credited in the bill because he was home-schooled and managed his way into earning a Heisman Trophy before being selected first overall by the Denver Broncos in the 2010 NFL draft.
Texas State Senator Van Taylor, who brought the piece of legislation for a vote, reports there are approximately 320,000 kids who are home-schooled in the state of Texas. This is an indication that the passing of the bill will have a major impact in the state. Texas joins 29 other states that have passed similar legislation.
