The often drama-filled Everett Golson era is apparently over in Notre Dame. ESPN’s Brett McMurphy is reporting that the embattled quarterback is transferring from South Bend and will play his final season for another program.

Golson led Notre Dame to the BCS National Championship game in 2012, but was suspended for the entire 2013 season due to academic violations. He returned as the Irish’ starting quarterback in 2014, leading the team to an 8-5 record. The talented quarterback also combined for 37 total touchdowns and 14 interceptions that season.
While Golson didn’t give a reason for his decision to transfer, he did release a statement (via Fox Sports).
After much thought, prayer and discussion with my family, I have decided that it is in my best interest to graduate from Notre Dame and transfer to another school effectively immediately,” Golson said. “I would like to thank everyone at Notre Dame for the opportunity to compete at the highest level of college football, but most importantly to obtain my degree from one of the finest universities in the country.
To all the Fighting Irish fans, I want to thank you for your support over the past four years and let you know I truly love Notre Dame. To my former teammates, who I will miss tremendously, I wish much success in the future and will be your biggest fan from afar.
As a graduate transfer, Golson will not have to sit out a year. Instead, he can suit up for another team this upcoming fall.
There’s a strong chance that Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly played a role in Golson’s decision to transfer. Anyone who knows anything about the Irish football program understands just how hard Kelly was on his starting quarterback.
It remains to be seen where Golson will end up.
