The Miami Marlins were nearly no-hit by Atlanta Braves starter Shelby Miller on Sunday. Immediately after the game, Miami’s brass announced that manager Mike Redmond and bench coach Rob Leary were relieved of their duties.

In announcing the firings, Marlins president of baseball operations Michael Hill had this to say:
Hopefully a new voice will spark and motivate our guys to play as capable as we know they are of playing.
A replacement is expected to be announced on Monday.
Now 16-22 on the season, Miami sits in fourth place in the National League East. It’s a relatively quick hook for Redmond, but it’s also something that doesn’t come as too much of a surprise. After an extremely active offseason that saw the Marlins add a tremendous amount of veteran talent, expectations were unreasonably high.
Redmond fell victim to said expectations.
Hired to replace Ozzie Guillen as the team’s manager in 2013, Redmond’s first season ended with the Marlins losing 100 games. He then followed that up with a surprising 77-85 record last year. In addition to the offseason moves we covered above, this set expectations sky-high for Redmond and the Marlins.
Redmond, 44, played 13 years in the Majors, primarily as a backup catcher. Prior to getting the Marlins gig, he managed in the Toronto Blue Jays system for two years.
He’s the second manager fired this season, joining former Milwaukee Brewers skipper Ron Roenicke.
