Report: Chicago Cubs to Call Up Addison Russell

The Chicago Cubs are slowly ending their reign of prospect terror.

Shortly after delaying third baseman Kris Bryant’s entrance into the major leagues to keep him from becoming a free agent until 2021, the organization is calling up infielder Addison Russell. Jon Heyman of CBS Sports broke the news:

Though Russell is a shortstop, he’ll likely replace Airsmendy Alcantara and Jonathan Herrera at second base while Tommy La Stella is on the disabled list due to a rib injury. Russell batted .318 with four doubles, one home run and nine RBI in 11 games with the Triple-A Iowa Cubs.

Chicago acquired Russell when they sent All-Star pitcher Jeff Samardzija to the Oakland Athletics in July 2014. Baseball America ranks Russell as the No. 3 prospect.
