Report: 49ers’ Alex Boone Open to Being Traded

Alex Boone of the San Francisco 49ers isn’t afraid of making waves.

The team’s starting offensive guard has decided to skip voluntary workouts this offseason and isn’t averse to being traded, per Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area.

The 49ers and Boone have yet to discuss a contract extension, the source said. Boone is open to being traded and signing a long-term contract with another team.

Boone does not plan to report for any portion of the 49ers’ offseason, other than the team’s mandatory minicamp that runs June 9-11. If he remains with the 49ers, he plans to report to training camp on time, the source said.

Boone’s no dummy. This being a contract year, he doesn’t want to end up hurting his stock coming into the season rusty like he did last season, when it took him a long time to look like himself again. Getting into football shape is impossible without actually engaging in football activities, and his performance clearly suffered.

At this point, 49ers fans are probably rolling their eyes—this being the second year in a row Boone has made an issue of his contract.

That said, a closer look at the numbers reveals Boone has a legitimate complaint.

Per Spotrac, the 49ers are on the hook for $3.74 million against the cap for Boone’s services. That means there are 19 guards making more money this year (provided the 49ers don’t give him what he wants) than Boone.

Boone has been one of the league’s upper-echelon guards the past few years, and he definitely deserves to get paid like one, whether you agree with his actions or not.

It remains to be seen if the 49ers will give in to Boone’s desire for a big contract extension this summer. Given the turmoil endured by the storied franchise the past few months, it may be in the team’s best interest to make Boone a happy camper.

If not, general manager Trent Baalke should by all means explore trade options for the outspoken guard, especially with the draft looming on Thursday.
