In a sign that the team might have made a mistake handing out a six-year, $120.6 million contract to Joe Flacco back in 2013, the Baltimore Ravens are already looking to rework his deal.
Owner Steve Bisciotti indicated in a conference call this past week that the organization wants to restructure the quarterback’s deal in order to make it more team friendly moving forward.
We can make it a win-win for Joe,” Bisciotti said, via Fox Sports. “I think he’ll be very amendable to a new deal.”
The Super Bowl-winning signal caller is set to count $14.6 million against the cap in 2015 before that number increases to a ridiculous $28.6 million in 2016. In fact, Flacco is set to count over $84 million against the team’s cap in the final three years of his six-year deal.
And while the cap is expected to increase a great deal league-wide over the coming years with the new television contract in place, those aren’t necessarily numbers that will afford Baltimore the ability to remain viable under the cap.
On the field, Flacco has performed pretty well since inking his massive deal. Following a disappointing 2013 campaign that saw Baltimore miss out on the playoff altogether, it was able to rebound 10-win 2014 campaign. For his part, Flacco set personal bests in passing yards (3,986) and passing touchdowns (27) this past season. He also threw 15 more touchdowns than interceptions, which is a career-best mark. That came on the heels of the former first-round pick tallying more interceptions (22) than touchdowns (19) in 2013.
