When the Miami Dolphins traded up to the third overall pick in the 2013 NFL draft to select Oregon defensive end Dion Jordan, the expectation was that he would be a franchise book end for the team for the next decade.
After struggling to make any type of impact (46 tackles and three sacks) in his first two NFL seasons, it’s highly likely that Jordan’s Dolphins’ career is over.
ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported on Tuesday that the NFL plans to suspend Jordan for the entire 2015 season due to yet another violation of the league’s substance abuse policy.
Jordan, 25, served a four-game suspension for violating the same policy last year.
This piece of news also puts an end to a potential trade between the Dolphins and Philadelphia Eagles that would have reunited Jordan with his former college coach, Chip Kelly.
These types of situations are both dumbfounding and sad. Seemingly set to earn millions and have a successful NFL career, Jordan has let substance abuse derail what was once a promising future.
At 25, he might still return to the NFL. However, it’s now time Jordan gets his house in order off the field. Without that, he will never play in the league again.
That’s the sad reality.
